"Lincoln Buff China"
In 1864, after President Lincoln won a second term in office, Mrs. Lincoln indulged again her penchant for fashionable dinnerware with her purchase of a buff-bordered design from the Philadelphia firm of J. K. Kerr. In addition to the buff border, this French porcelain was gilded at the edge and had a gold circle in the center, which was fashionable at the time.
Two months later, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and, therefore, the new china saw very little usage. The bill for this new china purchase remained unpaid until August of 1865 when it was settled and signed for by The White House. |
