Another dessert service that President Monroe and his wife Elizabeth brought to Ashlawn-Highland was a French design called "Rose et Feuillage". Great entertainers that they were, Monroe and his wife believed that France produced the finest porcelains of their time and loved to use their French dessert services at every opportunity. It is possible that Monroe discovered this pattern while in France as Foreign Minister and had a set made for himself. It is known that France's Louis XVI's younger brother, the Comte d'Artois purchased three sets of this pattern for his use in his three royal residences including St. Germain, and his home at Palais du Temple in Paris.
This beautiful pattern was originally produced at the Sevres factory during the 1770's, with later production coming from the rue Thiroux and dauborg St. Denis factories. |
