These plates were from the Monroe family dessert service. Decorated with a green, white and gold border, these Monroe dessert plates were complete with floral centers in natural colors. Kept in the Monroe family for generations since their original purchase, the scroll or feather-like design on the rim is seen on various examples of French porcelain in the eighteenth century and was used on both French and English porcelains up through the early 1800's. President James Monroe and his wife Elizabeth used these plates at their homes in Ashlawn-Highland during his Presidency and Oak Hill upon his retirement from office.
