After the War of 1812, President James Monroe moved from his home on "I" Street in Washington, DC into the newly re-furbished "Executive Mansion" bringing with him many personal articles, including his gilded, monogrammed porcelain. Marked with his monogram on the rim, Monroe ordered this porcelain service to be personalized by adding a spectacular eagle and shield surrounded by stars in the center. Trimmed in gold, this service was used also as a complimentary service to the burgundy Monroe state china that is available in Woodmere's White House Collection. |
