These numbered, limited edition plates are from Woodmere's Independence Day Series. On July 4th of both 2005 and 2006 Woodmere introduced a new design commemorating our nation's birthday. These 10 3/4" plates make great display pieces on the wall or on the table. Each comes in a beautiful, specially marked, gift box with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity matching the number on the plate.
The 2005 Independence Day plate from Woodmere "Thayer Eagle" is a reproduction of a Chinese export porcelain design originally produced in the early 19th century. This particular design was produced for Sylvanus Thayer who has been described by some as the "father" of the United States Military Academy at West Point. The 2006 version has a similar border design but the center design is an eagle by famed woodcarver, John Haley Bellamy. The original of this carving was aboard the vessel which President Lincoln met secretly with representatives of the South to begin the end of the Civil War. Today, it resides in the museum of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
