The pieces of this collection are reproductions of the china that President Washington purchased from French Foreign Minister Count de Mustier in 1790. Count de Mustier was returning from his assignment here in the newly formed United States of America and Washington purchased this china, along with a variety of other household articles. When New York and Philadelphia were our nation's Capitols, Washington used this gold encrusted china in his residences while entertaining heads of state, his Cabinet, and other foreign dignitaries. The original set was made in the Sevres factory, while the later additions, including the pieces with Washington's monogram affixed to them, were made in a variety of factories throughout France . |
